“A complete stranger told me I had breast cancer. She saved my life.”
Episode 41: Charlotte Matthews – Associate Professor at UVA
Charlotte Matthews is the author of two poetry collections: Still Enough to Be Dreaming and Green Stars. Her work has appeared in American Poetry Review, Virginia Quarterly Review and Cave Wall. She is a professor of creative writing at the University of Virginia.
Many Saturdays she brings her 1914 Smith Corona typewriter to her local farmers’ market and writes poems on the spot. Today, however, we are not talking about her talent as an author and poet. We are discussing her personal journey of living with breast cancer and surviving. It is a journey that will open one’s eyes to the state of our current healthcare system. Her experiences also teach a valuable lesson on how to become one’s own healthcare advocate when diagnosed with a serious illness.
