Episode 4: Don Schumacher

Dr. Don Schumacher has more than 30 years experience in hospice and palliative care administration. Since 2002, he has served as the President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO), largest nonprofit leadership organization representing hospice and palliative care programs and professionals in the world.

The one thing I know for sure, Don Schumacher has left his mark within a growing industry. Over the last several years, Medicare has initiated tighter regulations on “what hospices’ will or won’t pay for upon admission resulting in an ever shrinking length of stay hitting an all time low,” according to Dr. Schumacher.

This is all happening when many of the original pioneers are passing the torch to the younger generation and retiring. Those pioneers include Don Schumacher who announced his retirement in 2016.

Where is this industry headed over the next decade? What will the industry do without Dr. Schumacher and his strong, passionate foothold in Washington, DC? I personally have never known the hospice industry without Don being a part of it. It is going to be a big change.

Today we’ll talk to Dr. Schumacher about where the hospice and palliative industry is headed and a little bit about the next chapter in his life.
